Is the Chinese Crested hypoallergenic?
Dog allergies in humans are primarily caused by a protein found in a dog's saliva, dander, and urine — not the coat itself. Because the hairless variety of Chinese Crested has little to no coat, it spreads less of this allergen through shed hair in the home compared to breeds with dense undercoats. This is why many people with mild dog allergies report fewer symptoms around a hairless Chinese Crested than around other breeds.
Is this scientifically documented?
There is no fully hypoallergenic dog breed — this is well established in veterinary literature. The reduced allergen spread in the hairless variety is about reduced shedding, not the absence of the allergen itself. The powderpuff variety has a normal double coat and offers no equivalent benefit.
What should I do if I have allergies?
Spend time with adult dogs of the breed — ideally several individuals — before deciding, and talk to your doctor about the severity of your allergy. See our breed overview for more on what distinguishes the hairless and powderpuff varieties.
Does hairless skin need special care?
Yes — hairless dogs require sun protection and moisturizing that coated dogs don't. See our health overview for more on caring for the breed's specific needs.
